The American Society of Rio de Janeiro presented the Ralph Greenberg Award to Anna Whyte at its Thanksgiving Dinner and Centennial Celebration on Thursday, November 23, at the J.W. Marriott Hotel.
The award was first given by the Society in 1977 and recognises persons who have unselfishly contributed their time and effort for the betterment of the Rio de Janeiro community. The award is named after Ralph N. Greenberg who, while serving as President of the Society in 1974, died in a tragic accident on his way to preside over a meeting of the Society’s Board. Nominations were accepted from American Society members and other community members, and the winner was chosen by a committee of past Greenberg Award winners who live in the Rio de Janeiro area.
Anna is a well-known figure in the international community and works hard on behalf of the BCS, the American Society and the International Club – often serving on the boards of all three at once! Since relocating to Brazil with her family, Anna has focused on social entrepreneurship and programs that improve the educational opportunities for underserved youth. She assists local NGOs with their strategic expansion, fundraising and development of sustainable business models.
Anna is also a link between NGOs and the local expat community, organizing safe and enriching volunteer opportunities and has worked on behalf of 30 different Rio de Janeiro charities, including Onda Solidaria/Onda Esportiva, Art & Social Transformation, Il Sorriso dei miei bimbi, Projeto Uerê, International Favela LAB, Street Child United, Luta Pela Paz, and Estrela da Favela.
The BCS extends its hearty congratulations to Anna on this well-deserved recognition.
