A while ago, chatting with a group of friends we commented the fact that, in recent years there had been very few stagings of comedies written by João Bethencourt. Remembering that João Bethencourt (1924-2006) was one of Brazilian theatre writers who had also achieved success in different countries in Europe when his plays were translated into English, French, German and Hungarian, among other languages.
Recently Hélio Zacchi and Agnes Xavier, through their theatre company Hagazachi Comunicações started reviving João Bethencourt and presenting his plays to new audiences. They started with “Bonifácio Bilhões” at the Teatro Vanucci. And now they have produced his “Tem Um Psicanalista Na Nossa Cama”, a play where they have the chance of again playing a married couple – remembering Hélio and Agnes are married in real life! “Tem Um Psicanalista Na Nossa Cama”, although written in the 1970s, and having been presented in about twenty-seven countries, still makes a lot of sense. People do not change that much and continue dealing with their own problems and insecurities. Would a psychanalyst be the answer to their needs? Would he be able to put their minds to rest? The answer is in the theatre!
At the same time, Hélio and Agnes recently inaugurated (or rather, re-inaugurated) a theatre that had been closed for over five years. Before “Tem Um Psicanalista Na Nossa Cama”, they had another production of theirs also in the same theatre, a play called “Minha Futura Ex”.
This time, once again Agnes and Hélio join forces with Rogério Fabiano who had also directed their previous production. A good team! Almost a family production as well. Besides acting, Agnes also worked as Rogério Fabiano’s assistant director; and Tiago Xavier, the photographer, is Agnes’ son! It also seems that the entire team had their say in the staging. Specially with the very colorful costumes by Francisco Leite who also designed the simple, but effective set. And the beautiful lighting by Adenilson Junior is a bonus to the entire play.
The Teatro do Centro Cultural Light is a small and comfortable theatre, suited for small productions, although it provides good facilities for their audiences. In the past, it used to house musical shows and performances, mostly during the lunch hour. Located on Avenida Marechal Floriano, 168 – Downtown, Rio de Janeiro, inside a large building belonging to the Light company, it may sound to you as something very much out of the way. It is not so, however. The Metro (Presidente Vargas station) is only a block away. And performances take place on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays at 07:00 P.M., so there is plenty of time to catch the Metro back home, as the play lasts about seventy minutes. It opened on the 1st of August, and is scheduled to run until the 27th of September. Tickets cost R$ 40,00 (forty Reais) at all performances. The play is not advisable for young people under the age of sixteen. Although it is a very successful show – the evening I saw the play it was almost full! – the run will be short, because the Centro Cultural Light is going to house activities of their own during the month of October. So, if you wish to have a good laugh, with a play that is fine entertainment, do not miss “Tem Um Psicanalista na Nossa Cama”. Enjoy!
