An area of the gardens next to the church was set aside and re-landscaped to create the Margaret Mee garden, in honour of the British botanical painter who contributed so much to present-day knowledge of Brazilian flora, especially in the Amazon. The idea for the garden came from Chris Hieatt, who said, “Long before Margaret Mee attracted her legion of international admirers, here in Rio we had already been captivated by her striking personality and strongly held views on the environment. The British and Commonwealth Society is proud to have helped provide the Rio community with the Margaret Mee Garden, a lasting and living memorial to a remarkable woman.”
